Huanglong
Sichuan Province
In chinese, HuangLong means 'Yellow Dragon' - from huang, yellow, et long, dragon -, that was named after the shape of this parc, as we can see on the following parc map.
Huanglong parc was classified in 1992 as UNESCO's "Natural World Heritage", and in 2000 to the "World Human and Biosphere Reserve".
Huanglong national parc is located in the chinese province of Sichuan, and is composed of different sites on 1346 km2, with an elevation between 1700 and 5568 meters, at the south-east margin of QingZang plateau.
All of these sites are included within the boundaries of the SongPan county, Sichuan Aba Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture.
We chose to categorize the pictures of huanglong valley in three distinct zones.
The low part of huanglong valley is located at the bottom of the valley, and is about the entrance of the parc and some pool in the forest.
Waterfalls and other pools conduct us to the middle zone.
On top of the valley, in a circus we can find the top part , jewel of huanglong valley: the multicolor pool.

This low part of the huanglong national park starts in the large valley (huanglong valley is perpendicular to this bigger valley).
Low slope at the bottom through the forest. We can fond some pools, created by limestone concretion. Meaning: calcium in the water deposate on some surfaces, forming small dams, blocking the way of the water accumulating in pools. The "dam" becomes thicker and higher with time. This is a very lenghty process, and this calcareous concretions are very fragile.
Then, the path climbs between the trees, and passing by more pools or waterfalls we start to see the real character of this place.

The highest part of this huanglong valley is the multicolor pool, located in a circus at the extreme top of huanglong valley.
Simply amazing place, almost too beautiful to be true. Gorgeous colors in these pools.

From Chengdu, the easiest (and safest) way to arrive to Huanglong park is to fly there. One airport was built recently to developp tourism in the area (national parks of Huanglong and JiuZhaiGou). Here you can see some pictures of this airport, that is located on top of a mountain. Truly impressive.
